The Ross Sports Report is the website supporters of Fremont Ross High School have been waiting for. Whether you’re a student-athlete, parent, graduate or an interested member of the community, the Ross Sports Report is for you.
The goal of the RSR is to cover all Fremont Ross varsity sports. I won’t be able to be in-person at every sporting event, but I’ll be a lot of them. I will not just tell you if Ross won or lost, I’ll tell you what happened, how and what it means. I will also coordinate with all coaches so the events I’m not covering in person will not go ignored. My goal is have every Fremont Ross varsity event accounted for.
The RSR will feature:
- Event coverage in the form of game stories, features and columns providing analysis, insight and context.
- Season previews, game/meet previews and post season coverage for all sports – not just football (though there will be plenty of football).
- Athlete profiles. Know more than just how many points someone scored last night.
- Check-ins on Ross graduates performing at the next level.
- Daily news updates.
- Much, much more.
I will also actively seek out and listen to the voice of my audience. Coverage will go in the direction my subscribers tell it to go. As a newspaper reporter, I had to tailor my coverage to attract the most page views. The RSR is less concerned with total page views than servicing my paid subscribers. As much as I enjoy covering football, if my audience consists of no football parents but I have every tennis parent subscribed, I will be spending much of my time at the tennis courts.
Why do I have to pay for this?
I understand why some people may be resistant to paying to read the content of the RSR. I get it.
The fact is, I don’t know how to do this half-way. My standards of quality won’t allow me to do this as a fun hobby in my spare time while working another full-time job. I have to do this the right way, which means doing it full-time. But I also have a family to support. I know for some people a subscription fee, no matter how small, will be a deal-breaker, which I understand — thanks for looking anyway. But I have tried to find the right balance between a reasonable price and being able to pay the bills.
For the first two weeks, until Monday, Aug. 28, all content on this site will be free of charge to all. Please get a taste of what the RSR has to offer. After that point, a modest fee will be required. A subscription of $50 will get full access for the entire year, through next August. If you’re only interested in a particular part of the athletic calendar, or your budget is a little tighter, $30 can get you a seasonal subscription for fall, winter or spring sports.
When I reach 200 yearly subscriptions, I will then give free access to all Ross students and recent grads now in college. I want all the kids I cover and their friends to be able to enjoy the content regardless of economic situation.
If you do the math, 200 subscriptions times $50, I’m certainly not in this to get rich. I want to provide a service I think is needed in this community, a professional media outlet devoted entirely to the largest school in the area.
Please support
No matter how good my reporting and writing is, this endeavor, however, will not be successful without your support. Please consider joining me as I chronicle all things Fremont Ross.
Please enjoy the site though this free two-week preview. If you have any questions, please contact me at rmcgowan1005@gmail.com, reach out on Twitter @RMcGowan1 or on Facebook at RossSportsReport.
