FREMONT – Through three matches this season, the Ross girls tennis team was still looking for the right combinations for its doubles teams.

If Thursday night is any indication, the Lady Giants may be onto something.

Boosted by strong performances from a two new doubles pairs, Ross took a clean sweep from Oak Harbor, 5-0.

Leading the way for Ross was senior Jurni Kidd, making her first varsity appearance of the season. Kidd and Natalie Brown combined to win by sets of 6-4, 6-3.

“Jurni was, before this, a JV player and has worked super hard at practice and she deserved a shot at playing No. 2 doubles,” coach Lisa Wolfe said. “She did a great job for us tonight, obviously.”

The No. 1 doubles team of Berlin Swaisgood and Sophia Biggins won their match, 6-3, 6-2, and quelled some anxieties Wolfe had about playing the duo.

“I hesitated to put those two together because they’re such good friends and two good friends like to maybe not be so focused on their job,” Wolfe said. “They’re best friends and I hesitated to do it, but today I gave them the opportunity to play together. They proved themselves that they can stay focused on the job and they won tonight.”

The singles play continued to be strong for Ross as the Lady Giants are now 11-1 in singles matches this season.

Gillian Gallagher won No. 1 singles easily, 6-0, 6-1 and No. 3 singles Lily Abdoo won 6-1, 7-5. No. 2 singles Olivia Henry was pushed to the limit in her first set before winning 7-6 (8-6) and then won the second set in convincing fashion, 6-0.

“It’s a frustrated Oliva in the first set,” Wolfe said,” and it is a determined Olivia in the second set. She was not about to go into a second set tiebreaker.”

Ross is 3-1 overall on the year and returns to action Monday at home against Tiffin Columbia at 4:30.
