FREMONT – After taking the full weekend away from the court, the Lady Giants tennis team could have shown up for their match Monday against Tiffin Columbian either rested or rusty. It turned out to be rested.
Very well rested, indeed.
The Lady Giants blew away the Tornadoes with great efficiency, winning all five matches in less than an hour’s time.
The team held a practice Monday before its match, during which coach Lisa Wolfe knew her team was ready to play.
“They had Saturday and Sunday off and it was back to business today,” Wolfe said. “Sometimes you’re in it and sometimes you’re not. They know they’re all vying, especially in the doubles, for that chance at No. 1 or 2 doubles, so they had a great (practice). Their feet were moving, they had a great net game in warmups. I knew it was going to be a good day.”
Gillian Gallagher won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, improving her season record to 4-1.
No. 2 singles Olivia Henry won her first set, 6-2 and was on her way to another, leading 3-0, when her opponent withdrew due to feeling ill. Lili Abdoo won at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Both Henry and Abdoo remain undefeated on the season at 5-0, each.
Berlin Swaisgood and Sophia Biggins won at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-1 and the No. 2 doubles team of Natalie Brown and Jurni Kidd won 6-0, 6-0. Both doubles teams upper their records to 2-0.
Wolfe was particularly impressed, once again, with the play of Kidd, appearing in just her second varsity doubles match.
“She was aggressive at the net, she moved her feet. She was playing like she wanted to win,” Wolfe said of Kidd. “She’s definitely not taking that spot for granted and this is the second time she helped produce a win.”
The Lady Giants are 4-1 on the season and return to action Wednesday, hosting Bowling Green at 4:30.
