BOWLING GREEN – The Ross girls golf team experienced a few firsts Tuesday. It was the first time the Lady Giants had to play in the elements. The first time they played alongside higher-level competition. And it was the first time they got to see they can play with those more experienced and talented teams.

“We played Notre Dame, BG, Van Buren, and those are good teams, so it was a good test to see what the kids could do,” coach Nicole Kulasa said. “We also battled some elements, winds and rain, and that’s the first time a lot of these kids played in some rain.”

The Lady Giants shot a team score of 280. Shelby Level led the Lady Giants with a 62 while Mekhia Williams carded a 70 and Grace Britt had 71. Sarah Widman shot a 77.

Bowling Green won the event with a 180, one stroke better than Notre Dame. While Ross and Notre Dame may play in multiple TRAC events a season, Kulasa said Tuesday was the first time her players got a chance to play alongside the Eagles and see a top-quality opponent up close.

“It definitely shows them what it takes to compete at the higher levels but it also shows them that these girls make mistakes too and some of them were hitting the same shots as them, and some of them missed,” Kulasa said. “They’re all human and they’re competing on the same level. It’s showing them just because they’re better golfers or have nicer clubs or they go to Notre Dame or Bowling Green or Van Buren, it doesn’t mean they can’t compete with them.”

Ross returns to action at Genoa on Monday at 4:30.
