OREGON – A marathon victory wasn’t enough to continue the win streak.
The Ross girls tennis team saw its run of nine-straight duel match victories come to an end Tuesday night as the Lady Giants ran into a singles buzz-saw at Clay, losing 3-2.
“I was very proud,” coach Lisa Wolfe said. “I told the girls when we got home, I was as proud of them today as I am of a win. The doubles won in very tough matches.”
The No. 1 doubles team of Gillian Gallagher and Lily Abdoo won by scores of 6-3, 6-4 while the No. 2 doubles team of Jurni Kidd and Sophia Biggins played perhaps the match of the year – and certainly the longest. The duo won a three-hour marathon match in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.
“That was a killer,” Wolfe said.
The Eagles swept the singles matches from the Lady Giants, hardly dropping a game. Olivia Henry and Mallory Hutton each lost 0-6, 0-6 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, while Berlin Swaisgood fell by scores of 1-6, 1-6 at No. 3 singles.
“I was watching for their court composure and attitude and not giving up and they played long points and never gave up until the very end,” Wolfe said. “In those three singles girls, I was very proud of the way they played and told them they only get better when they play somebody that’s better than them. They took a free lesson today.”
Ross is now 10-2 overall, 4-1 in the TRAC. Ross is off Wednesday before traveling to TRAC power Notre Dame Academy Thursday for a 4:30 match.
While the Lady Giants were disappointed to see their win streak come to an end, she said the girls are anxious to get back on the court and want their shot at NDA.
“I think they were eager for practice tomorrow,” Wolfe said. “They can’t wait for practice tomorrow and then they’ll face Notre Dame, one of the two top dogs, in my mind. They can’t wait to play them.”
