Ross boys golf coach Jim Scharer was hoping to see just how far his team had come this season. The Little Giants were hoping to break 400 as a team.

Fate, however, had other ideas.

Scharer didn’t get a chance to see his team at its fullest Monday at the TRAC league tournament and the Little Giants shot a score of 434. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t like what he saw.

Ross was without its No. 1 golfer, Dylan Genzman, who was battling an illness. Furthermore, one of the Ross’ top four remaining golfers, Owen Smith, had elbow tendinitis. Despite the pain, Smith gutted through a round of 122.

“God love the kid, he didn’t have to finish but he did,” Scharer said. “He’s been shooting better than that, he probably would have been around 100, 105. He was about 20 shots higher.

“Owen refused (to withdraw),” Scharer said. “He said ‘I’m not going to let the team down.’ I admired him. I told him, ‘This is not worth hurting your elbow over’ and that was on No. 5. And he played the rest of the round. I can’t say enough. That’s a lot of torque on the elbow.”

Along with Smith, Zane Rousch and Cole Druckenmiller each shot 103 and Braxton White shot a 106.

“I love these kids,” Scharer said. “They’re already talking about how to improve for next year, what we can do in the summer, they’re already talking about how to make it so they can practice more in the summer.”

Ross will travel to Bedford Hills Wednesday for a match against Whitmer.
