SANDUSKY – The Lady Giants couldn’t take this one for granted.
While Sandusky hasn’t traditionally fielded a strong girls tennis team, Ross coach Lisa Wolfe told her individual flights they’d have to play at the top of their game Wednesday afternoon.
While the scores may not reflect it, she was right, and the Lady Giants responded.
Ross swept the singles flights, which it needed to do since the Blue Streaks won both doubles matches, as the Lady Giants took a 3-2 win over their rivals.
“I warned the singles ‘Don’t underestimate, by any means, who you’re playing tonight. Play tough,’” Wolfe said. “And they did. They did a great job.”
Gillian Gallagher won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Olivia Henry won at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Lily Abdoo won her first set 6-0, and was one her way to another set victory, 3-0, when her opponent had to withdraw for medical reasons.
“The singles girls for Sandusky are very good. I know it doesn’t (show in the scores), and it’s unbelievable,” Wolfe said.
While the singles had a good night, the doubles teams had a bumpy outing.
At No. 1 doubles, Natalie Brown and Berlin Swaisgood dropped a marathon three-set match 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (3-7), (2-7). The No. 2 team of Jurni Kidd and Sophia Biggins bowed out in straight sets, 0-6, 3-6.
“I was very disappointed in both of my doubles tonight,” Wolfe said. “The doubles both weren’t very active.”
Ross returns home for its final home match of the season Thursday as the Lady Giants host defending TRAC champion Toledo Central Catholic at 4:30. It is the team’s last tune-up before the two-day TRAC tournament on Friday and Saturday.
“I’m hoping Jurni and Sophia shake it off, whatever that was,” Wolfe said. “I’m expecting good things from my doubles.”
