FREMONT – In its final week of the regular season, the Ross boys golf team is nearing its goal of putting together a complete round. In every event, Ross has either started slowly or struggled to close out its round, or had trouble doing both.

Zane Rusch, boys golf

Monday afternoon, the Little Giants again started out just slowly enough to keep it from its long-sought-after goal of four scores in the 40s.

Ross shot a team score of 188 to Anthony Wayne’s 164.

“That (goal of) four scores in the 40s is just beyond our reach,” coach Jim Scharer said.  “We started off pretty rough. We got off the first tee very poorly and I thought, ‘Oh boy’ but then they started picking it up a little bit.

“Some of those (first) tee shots ended up being bogies, which isn’t terrible,” Scharer added. “It’s just one of those things. I honestly believe this team can shoot 180, I really believe they can, if they just believe in themselves. It’s a matter of getting over that hurdle.”

The Little Giants found two reasons to believe in themselves, in the forms of season-low scores from Zane Roush and Braxton White who both shot rounds of 44.

“The scary thing is Zane had two triple bogies and still shot 44,” Scharer said.

Braxton White, boys golf

With a par 35 over nine holes, Rousch finished nine-over, with six of those strokes coming on two holes. He played the remaining seven holes at just three-over.

“He was very solid,” Scharer said. “He’s very good off the tee, so if he keeps it in control and keeps it in play, and playing the white tees he can do it, if he keeps it in play, he can score it and that’s what he did today, except for on those two holes.”

White’s 44 came as a result of consistent play from start to finish.

“Braxton was hitting his irons pretty well today, made par on both Par 3s, just missed a birdie on eight,” Scharer said. “The difference today was Braxton didn’t throw an eight or a nine on the scorecard. That’s the key.”

Dylan Genzman shot 49 for Ross while Cole Druckenmiller rounded out the scoring with a 50.

Genzman and fellow senior Owen Smith will be playing their final round at the  Fremont Country Club Tuesday in the Little Giants’ last match of the season against Genoa.
