OREGON – Ross’ boys soccer team fell into a hole Tuesday from which it simply couldn’t climb out.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Little Giants lost 4-1.
“The first half was decent, Clay was actually the aggressor and we just didn’t keep up with their speed to start the game, not for a lack of effort,” coach Alex Coressel said. “They were just a little bigger, quicker and stronger than us.”
After Clay took a 2-0 lead, Drew Miesle got the Little Giants on the board off an assist from Sam Drubin. Clay, however, scored on a corner kick to retake a two-goal lead into halftime.
“The second half we battled and battled and battled, we just couldn’t put one in the net,” Coressel said.
Ross fired 10 shots at the goal, forcing the Clay keeper to make six saves. Clay fired 17 shots toward the Ross goal where keeper Mikey Contreras made seven stops.
“Clay is vastly improved over what they had been,” Coressel said. “They got a quite a few guys who used to play football so they’ve been improving over the last few years. Is it one we could have gotten? Absolutely. But we weren’t able to put anything in the back of the net.”
The loss dips the Little Giants’ record to 7-2 overall. Ross returns to action Saturday morning at Clyde. The girls will play at 10 a.m. and the boys to follow.
