PORT CLINTON – An illness and an injury wasn’t enough to slow down Ross’ girls tennis team as the Lady Giants race toward the conclusion of their season.
Ross won its second-to-last duel match of the season Monday, defeating Port Clinton 4-1, despite playing without one of its top players.
Lily Abdoo, undefeated in singles play this season, fell ill before the match and, with the sectional tournament looming Thursday, there was no sense in playing her Monday.
Despite her absence, the Lady Giants rolled in singles play.
Gillian Gallagher won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3, while Olivia Henry rolled at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and Mallory Hutton cruised at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2.
The Lady Giants did get a mild scare when Gallagher injured her ankle, though she stuck through the match.
“I said maybe you need to come off the court,” said coach Lisa Wolfe. “And she said ‘I’m not doing that, I’m not defaulting.’ She continued to play and she looked pretty good. She got some ice, of course, after the match was over.
“We may be without her tomorrow just to give her a days rest before Thursday.”
At No 2 doubles, Natalie Brown and Jurni Kidd won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. The Lady Giants’ lone setback came at No. 1 doubles where Berlin Swaisgood and Sophia Biggins lost 1-6, 3-6.
The victory raises Ross’ record to 14-4 overall. The Lady Giants close out the season Tuesday at Fostoria before hosting the sectional tournament beginning Thursday morning.
