TOLEDO – Ross’ girls basketball team is trying to put its focus on the process of playing basketball moreso than the final result. Because when the process is sound, the results will follow. And through three games, the results speak for themselves.

Brooklyn Baptista

Thursday night, the Lady Giants opened play in the TRAC with an emphatic win, 76-44, over St. Ursula, thanks to a process that saw Ross play as a single unit.

“What I saw tonight was group of girls that wanted to play ball, wanted to play ball together and wanted to do things right. They were focused,” coach Juan Vela said. “They were into what the job was and it was, obviously, to beat St. Ursula and play together.”

Ross got off to a fast start, leading 20-12 after the first quarter and 39-25 by halftime.

“The thing I’ve been seeing is they keep getting better every game, and not just by scoring or winning games,” Vela said. “It’s the little things that we talk about in practice that puts them in position to be successful. It’s even on the bench, it’s in the locker room, it’s talking in the game and communicating. Those little things, they’re improving on and, as a coach, those are the things I like to see. I know everybody else likes to see the scoreboard, but to get to the scoreboard, you have to do the little things.”

Brooklyn Baptista led the Lady Giants with 22 points, including six 3-pointers, while Jazmin Bulger scored 12. Olivia Baptista and Jasannah Sabiers added 10 and Ahlia Simms scored nine.

“The best thing was the second team came in in the fourth quarter and outscored them 16-11,” Vela said. “They kept scoring and kept hitting shots and kept sharing the ball. It was a total team effort. It was fun.”

The Lady Giants (3-0, 1-0) will try to keep the fun going Monday when they host Toledo Central Catholic.
