COLUMBUS—Swimming their biggest meet of the regular season, the Fremont Ross swim teams only found more reasons to be optimistic about their prospects for team and individual success at season’s end.

Olivia DeRodes

The Swimming Giants took part in the Ned Reeb invitational, one of the state’s premier swimming events, with nearly 1,500 athletes competing. The girls team compiled 127 points, good for ninth place overall while the boys scored 95 points, placing them 15th.

The highest finish of the meet by either team came from the girls’ 200 medley relay in which MaKennah Fitzgerald, Alexis Prenzlin, AnneMarie Moses and Olivia DeRodes finished fifth with a time of 1:49.63.

DeRodes then went on to place sixth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:14.16 and 13th in the 50 free.

Moses clocked a time of 1:00.13 in the 100 butterfly, good for 15th.

“All the girls that made finals had incredible swims,” girls coach Tine Moses said. “Olivia DeRodes went 5:14 in the 500 free, which was an outstanding time. She dropped a little bit of time from prelims. AnneMarie also went a little bit below, almost broke a minute which, at this point in the season, is an awesome swim.”

Sophomore Alexis Prenzlin took 17 th in the 200 individual medley and eighth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.27. Joining Prenzlin in the 100 was freshman Lauren Zimmerman, who cracked the top 20 with a time of 1:11.06. Just making the final at Ned Reeb, however, puts Zimmerman in select company.

“Over the years I’ve only had a handful make finals as a freshmen, Meghan (Moses) and Morgan Waggoner (both now swimming at Division I colleges) made finals as freshmen. Olivia, AnneMarie. Only the top swimmers, as freshmen, can accomplish that. She is a part of the group now.”

Andrew Evans and Dylan Weisenauer highlighted the boys’ day for the Little Giants.

Weisenauer finished 10th in both the 100 butterfly (55.35) and the 100 backstroke (58.00).

“Dylan swam well,” boys coach Phil Moran said. “He’s been dealing with some breathing issues but he did a pretty good job with that.”

Evans has the highest finish of all the Ross boys, taking sixth in the 100 breaststroke (59.40), in an event that served as an interesting preview of the district event.

“It’s going to be an interesting district meet in that breaststroke because I think six of the top 10 people in that event are going to be swimming in Northwest Ohio’s district meet,” Moran said. “It’s going to be one fast event in district, that’s all I know.”

Evans also took ninth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:59.49.

Evans and Weisenauer, along with Tate Williams and William Taylor, combined to finished eighth in the 200 freestyle while Ethan Taylor, Micthelll Mullholand, Austin Kramer and Case Stevenson finished 17th in the 400 freestyle.

“We had three have (personal records) in relay in the morning and came back and swam faster at night,” Moran said of the 400 relay team. “That was pretty good.”

Moran added, however, his team needs to get better in its approach to day-long meets where they swim preliminaries in the morning and finals in the evening.

“When you swim in the morning and have to come back and swim a couple hours later, are you rested? What did you eat for lunch? Are you stretching?” Moran said. “We had like a 45-minute delay we had to deal with when we got back….that wasn’t necessarily good either.

“We were a little inconsistent. Some kids swam faster in the morning, some swam faster at night. The goal, obviously, is to swim faster at night. They have to learn to manage what they do between prelims and finals and how they spend that time and what they do.”
