FREMONT – Three championships, two meet records and recognition as the top swimmer of the TRAC Championship meet. Alexis Prenzlin had a pretty good day Saturday.

Alexis Prenzlin

The sophomore swimmer stole the spotlight as Ross hosted the TRAC swimming championship meet. She claimed first place in two individual events, swam a leg of a first-place relay and broke two records along the way to earn Swimmer of the Meet honors.

Prenzlin and her Lady Giant teammates finished second as a team, finishing just 3.5 points behind champion St Ursula Academy (622.5 to 619).

“The girls knew it would be tight going in,” Ross girls coach Tina Moses said. “We just said, ‘Do your best,’ and they did, they stepped up. We had some amazing swims. Nothing to be ashamed of.”

The Lady Giants finished first or second in all but two events Saturday, with Prenzlin leading the way.

She won the 100 breaststroke in a record-setting time of 1:07.00, .19 seconds faster than the previous meet record. Prenzlin also took first in the 200 IM, clocking a time of 2:14.83.

Then, along with MaKennah Fitzgerald, AnneMarie Moses and Olivia DeRodes, she helped set a new record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:50.65. Their time surpassed the record of 1:51.04 set two years ago by Fitzgerald, AnneMarie Moses, Meghan Moses, Morgan Waggoner.

“She had a really good day,” Ross coach Tina Moses said. “(Swimmer of the Meet Award) is a swimmer who wins two events and if there is a tie, there is a power point system we go by, depending on the event you swim and how fast you swim it in comparison to the rest of the times in the country. She had a great day.”

TRAC championships were also claimed by DeRodes (200 freestyle, 1:58.68) and Fitzgerald (100 backstroke, 1:01.14).

DeRodes and Fitzgerald also took second-place finishes in the 500 and 100 freestyles, respectively, while AnneMarie Moses finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.73.

The Lady Giants also grabbed second in the 200 and 400 relays. Faith Zimmerman, Mara Brown, Rilee Overmyer and Prenzlin swam the 200 while Fitzgerald, Moses, Brown and DeRodes swam the 400.”

“MaKennah had a great swim in the 100, 1:01 is really fast right now,” Tina Moses said. “Olivia had a great race in the 200 free, they were neck-and-neck and at the very end she just outswam the girl from Notre Dame, a very good swimmer.”

Boys team also takes second place

With state power St. Francis in the competition, the rest of the TRAC was left to compete for second place. Powered by strong days from Andrew Evans and Dylan Weisenauer, the Little Giants cruised to capture second place, doing so with 477.5 points, more than 100 points more than third-place Findlay’s 371.5.

St. Francis, as expected, compiled 715 points, winning all but one event en route to the team championship.

Andrew Evans

Keeping St. Francis from sweeping the championships, was senior Andrew Evans.

Evans not only won the 100 breaststroke, he did so in record time. His time of 59.49 seconds broke the previous meet record of 59.7.

Evans also finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.28.

“He was the favorite seed (in the breaststroke), but his IM time had us a little worried because it was a little off,” boys coach Phil Moran said. “We weren’t really sure what we were going to get out of the breaststroke, but he stepped up and swam fast.”

Sophomore Dylan Weisenauer captured a pair of individual second-place finishes, clocking times of 53.64 seconds in the 100 butterfly and 55.49 in the 100 backstroke.

“He’s had some health issues and we’ve been struggling getting the training in,” Moran said. “I think we’ve got that situated so hopefully in the next couple weeks we can get consistent in our workouts and that’ll help him even more.”

Evans and Weisenauer joined forces with Tate Williams and William Taylor to also finish second in both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Dane Michael

“The 200 free was only like half a second slower than their best time,” Moran said. “When they made that, all four guys were pretty lasered up. That was a pretty good swim. We had a lot of guys drop time off their seeds. That was nice.”

Also, Dane Michael finished second in the diving competition, totaling 293.15 points.

Dane stepped up on his last dive, the 11th dive,” Moran said. “He was behind some really good scores but ended up beating the Findlay boy for second, that last dive put him over the top for second.

“Drew Edmonds had a good breaststroke. Zach Edmonds had some good swims,” Moran added. “Trenton Ward broke 30 for the first time ever in his 50 and dropped maybe five seconds in the 100. We had a lot of decent swims and kids dropping some time. That was nice to see.”
