FREMONT – Tuesday afternoon’s track quad meet gave the coaches of the Fremont Ross track and field teams a chance to view their squads with a wider lens.
Hosting teams from Clay, St. Francis/St. Ursula and SJCC, the Little Giants used Tuesday as a chance to try some different things and get a look at everyone in a season where finding meets to run has been a challenge.
“First of all, it gives all our kids who don’t get a chance to go on Saturday a chance to run and a chance to compete,” Ross boys track coach John Elder said. “…(It’s) a chance and to find out if they’re good enough to go on Saturday. Are we missing anybody we could be taking on a Saturday but that we haven’t?”
Elder said he and Ross’ other coaches haven’t yet discussed who might have moved up the ranks, but he said a handful of Little Giants made an impression.
“I think there was some definite good things,” Elder said. “Brayden Darr ran a really nice 3200. It’s the first time he’s ever ran it and he broke 11 minutes (10:58), which is one of the first goals we set for kids.
“Noah Huffman, his time in the 110 (hurdles) isn’t really that great but he won and it’s a nice little confidence boaster for him. That was nice.”
In addition to allowing lesser-experienced athletes a chance to run, Tuesday’s competition gave Ross’ field athletes a chance to use the day to hone their events.
“The field event kids…the Tuesday meets are a really a good chance for them to practice,” Elder said. “Tuesday meets give them a chance to compete in a competitive setting. We put relays together that we’ve been using because it given them a chance to practice handoffs.”
While the meet wasn’t scored for team totals, Ross teams each had 10 events they took home first-place finishes, far more than any other school.
Friday afternoon Ross will travel to the Marion Harding Invitational where the Little and Lady Giants will compete against 15 to 16 other schools, many from the Columbus area.
“We kind of wanted to go down to the Columbus area to try out some different competition,” Elder said. “Our younger kids, (It’s) a chance for them to see what high school track is like, if they have aspirations of advancing in the championship season, to see what it’s going to take to do that. And, for our older runners, a chance, if they do make it to state, to see the kind of competition down there.”
