FREMONT – When it looked like the Ross softball team was on the verge of being shut out by Notre Dame Academy in a five-inning shortened game, the Lady Giants showed they would not go out quietly.
Trailing by 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, three outs away from defeat, Ross battled back. The Lady Giants batted around the order and plated four runs in the inning to extend the game.
However, Notre Dame answered right back, scoring four runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning, once again leading by 10 runs. The Lady Giants didn’t have another game-extending rally in their pocket this time, as Notre Dame went on to a 14-4, six-inning win.
Notre Dame’s offense showed steady consistency all day, scoring at least a run an inning from the second inning on.
Ross, on the other hand, had a slow start on offense. The Lady Giants failed to produce a single baserunner through the first four innings. Finally, in the bottom of the fifth, Kaylee Dodson lead off with a double. Claire Ochs later drove home Dodson and soon after, Audrianna Melchor’s two-RBI double score Ochs and Hailey Taylor. Maya Lenke also scored in the inning on a wild pitch.
Back-to-back errors by Ross in the top of the sixth set the table for the Eagles to answer Ross’ runs with four of their own to put the game out of reach once again.
The Lady Giants committed four errors on the day, combined with Notre Dame’s 17 base hits and Ross’ pitchers, Morgan Englund and Melchor, were pitching under pressure for most of the afternoon.
The loss drops Ross to 3-11 overall, 0-8 in the TRAC.
