TOLEDO – The Lady Giant softball team picked up its first win of the season in TRAC play and it did so in an emphatic way.
Ross scored five runs in the top of the second inning and cruised to a 10-2 win over Toledo Central Catholic.
After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Giants blew open the game. Morgan Englund drove in the first run of the game with a base hit, scoring Claire Ochs. Kayle Rich followed with a sacrifice fly to score Hailey Taylor then Kalee Dodson hit a 2-RBI double scoring Englund and Gabby Zuniga. Paige Risch’s base hit scored Dodson for the fifth run of the inning.
The Irish answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, but the Lady Giants countered with two more in the third.
Englund hit an RBI sac fly to score Ochs then Taylor scored on a base hit to center field by Rich and Ross had a 7-2 lead.
Mya Lenke hit a 2-RBI base hit in the sixth then Risch put an exclamation point on the victory with a solo home run in the top of the seventh.
The Lady Giants totaled 13 hits at the plate providing more than enough offense for Englund who had a stellar performance in the pitcher’s circle.
Englund threw all seven innings, allowing just four hits and four walks while striking out three and allowing just two earned runs.
Taylor went 3-for-4 at the plate while Zuniga and Risch each had multiple hits. Rich, Englund, Dodson, Risch and Lenke each had a pair of RBIs.
The win improves Ross to 4-12 overall, 1-9 in the TRAC. The Lady Giants travel to Lima Senior Tuesday for a doubleheader with the Spartans.
