FREMONT – From the outset, the Lady Giant soccer team took control of the tempo in its home-opening game against Port Clinton and never let it go.

Paige Drusback

Ashtyn Schneider
While a couple of miscues ended up in Ross’ net, the Lady Giants put on a strong performance and took a 3-2 victory over the Redskins.
“Overall, I thought we played really well,” coach Phil Collison said. “We did a good job passing the ball, moving the ball, doing everything we wanted to do. We had one called back, honestly, we did a really great job. We controlled the tempo of the match, without a doubt. It could have been six (goals scored).
“We just got sloppy at times – it wasn’t sloppy, we just didn’t clear the ball on both of their goals.”
Ross opened the scoring 20 minutes in when Paige Drusback potted the Lady Giants’ first goal of the season. Port Clinton tied the game seven minutes later, but Ross re-took the lead in the 32nd minute thanks to a goal from Ashtyn Schneider.

Sarah Watson

Jessica Shiets
Jessica Shiets scored midway through the second half to grow the lead. While Port Clinton trimmed the deficit with 10 minutes remaining but Ross’ lead was never seriously threatened.
Goalkeeper Sarah Watson picked up her first career in in net, making two saves.
“The defense was strong tonight,” Collison said. “The back four did a really great job.
“Tonight we did such a better job of passing the ball around and distributing. I think we just need to work on communication. We need to continue to work on that to improve.”
The Lady Giants (1-1 overall) return to play Wednesday at home against Toledo Central Catholic.
