FREMONT – Even without its most experienced player, the Fremont Ross girls golf team enjoyed a solid day on the course.

Alana Smith
The Lady Giants shot a team score of 232 in a duel match against Genoa at the Fremont County Club Thursday.
Junior Shelby Level missed the match due to illness but the Lady Giants didn’t let their best player’s absence deter their focus.
“I think they stepped up. We had three scores in the 50s, which is huge,” coach Nicole Kulasa said. “I think if we’d had Shelby we’d have had four scores in the 50s.
“Our scores didn’t show, but there was a lot of good things they did,” she added. “Some of them did a real nice job putting, some did a nice job hitting. The new kids that just started out this year are starting to hit the ball better. I think everything is starting to come together.”
Freshman Alana Smith shot a team-low score of 50 while Mekhia Williams followed with a 58. Sarah Widman posted a 59 and Jasannah Sabiers shot a 65.
Smith has been a consistently reliable scorer for the Lady Giants. Out of six nine-hole match events thus far, Smith has shot between 47 and 55 five times.
“She makes good ball contact, she wants to improve her putting and get better in her short game but I think she’s starting to make better ball contact and making smarter choices,” Kulasa said. “We talked a lot today about course management and when to hit certain shots. I think all this is going to start coming together here in the next month.”
The Lady Giants return to the course Tuesday when they host Perrysburg at the Fremont Country Club at 4:30.
