TOLEDO – The Lady Giant tennis team found itself in an unfamiliar position Tuesday evening: On the wrong end of the scoreboard.
Fremont Ross’ eight-match win streak to begin the season was snapped by the hands of TRAC rival St. Ursula, 4-1.
“We played our strong lineup because that was our only chance to win, we’re not a team like we were last year where I can switch and swap and still end up with Berlin at No. 3 singles,” Ross coach Lisa Wolfe said. “We’re not that kind of team this year, so I just thought, (from) scouting and looking at the scores of teams they’ve played, there was a shot that we could pull out a doubles and a singles (win) and a No. 3 point, but it didn’t happen.”
The Lady Giants’ lone bright spot came from No. 3 singles where Berlin Swaisgood defeated Teagan McCready, 7-5, 6-2, doing so in what has become typical fashion for Swaisgood: by rallying from an early deficit.
Swaisgood’s individual record is now 6-0 in play at No. 3 singles this year and she is the last of the Lady Giants to remain undefeated at her primary flight.
“I can’t remember the exact score, but she was down a few games,” Wolfe said. “For her to turn it around like that, she has a lot of determination. A lot of it is in her head, ‘I’m not losing’ type of thing.”
Ross (8-1 overall, 3-1 TRAC) is back in action Wednesday when the Lady Giants travel to Norwalk for another tough match. Wolfe said her players need to let Tuesday’s loss roll of their backs.
“I’m going to, so they better,” she said. “It’ll be another tough one, this week we have two tough ones in St. Ursula and Norwalk. They’re a solid team. We’re going to play our strong lineup again and we’ll see where that takes us.”
