FREMONT – The Fremont Ross boys tennis team was thrown into the deep end of the pool in its season-opener Tuesday.
The Little Giants had four players making their varsity tennis debut against a tough Norwalk team. Though Ross was largely competitive against the Truckers, further coach Lisa Wolfe’s belief this season holds the potential to be a quality season, it got off to a tough start in a 4-1 defeat.
“They will get better as their confidence builds,” Wolfe said. “(For) three courts and four players this was their first time playing a varsity tennis match. Not bad against a very talented Norwalk team.”
Ross picked up its lone win in No. 1 doubles where Lucas Cronin and Ethan Moyer won a three-set match, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 over Andrew Riley and Wyatt Brown. While they’ll play the majority of the season at singles, Cronin and Moyer will likely play the postseason tournament together at doubles where there’s a chance they’ll see Riley and Brown against at sectionals.
Playing the first match of their careers, No. 2 doubles team of Fankie Scott and Kurt Harrison lost 1-6, 0-6. While at No. 1 singles, Andrew Miller fell 0-6, 2-6.
Evan Oglesbee and Isaac Minor, at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, lost by scores of 2-6, 3-6 and 3-6, 4-6.
“I thought our team did as well as can be expected,” Wolfe said. “I know each one of them played to the best of their ability and each court loss comes with a lesson.”
