FREMONT – The Fremont Ross girls tennis team is still looking for the right mix for its lineup. That tinkering may continue for some time as six of its seven starting athletes are new to varsity-level tennis. And some of those are new to the game itself.
With a team so young and inexperienced, growing pains are inevitable and Monday evening Ross fell to Tiffin Columbian by a 5-0 final.
Vivyanna Esquivel fell at No. 1 singles, 1-6, 1-6. Alexis Huff lost 1-6, 0-6 at No. 2 singles and Morgan Shetzer fell 3-6, 2-6 at third singles, but coach Lisa Wolfe likes what she saw.
“Morgan Shetzer played a great match today,” Wolfe said.
Ava Smith and Trinity Smith fell at No. 1 doubles, 0-6, 0-6 and at No. 2 doubles Shea Smith and Lucy Miller were defeated, 2-6, 2-6.
Wolfe said the doubles is still a work in progress.
“We’re just shaking up the lineup until our doubles gel,” she said. “So far we haven’t seen what we want. And it’s not about wins, it’s working together.”
The Lady Giants are 0-2 on the young season and return to the court Wednesday as they host Clyde at 4:30.
