FREMONT – It seems to be a common occurrence lately for the Lady Little Giants as they dispose of another victim, this time the Lima Lady Panthers by a count of 64-27.
In winning their 16th game of the 2021-22 campaign there was never a doubt on this win as the Ladies went on a 10-0 run on way to their 10th win in 11 tries in the TRAC.
By the time the first quarter ended the Lady Giants held a 19-7 lead. During the opening quarter Destiny Robinson, Abby Cahill and Lyndi Wolf led the Ladies with four points each. Of their seven points, the Lady Spartans got their only “three ball” of the game from Ayrianna Engberg.
The domination continued in the second stanza as Ross outscored Lima again, this time by a 19–6 drubbing. Carma Johnson led Ross during the second eight-minute stretch. Johnson collected six points while Robinson added four, Wolf four, Aleah Whaley three and Janiah Holmes two.
With the score 38-13 to start the third quarter, coach Juan Vela substituted out some of his starters. “Before the game I kept talking to the girls about habits, coach Juan Vela explained. “This is a game, it’s a league game. You still need the same focus; you still need to do the same things as if Central were here. We did do that. We played hard and the rhythm of the game was a bit different. We got different players in in different situations. But I thought (senior) Aleah (Whaley) played awesome tonight. It was good for her to hit four threes. Her teammates were happy for her, and I thought she defended well. It was nice for her to play so many minutes and seeing the other junior varsity girls go in. Overall, it was a very good night.”
Speaking of Whaley and her three point tries. She added two in the third quarter and one in the fourth to collect 12 points for a season high. Another bench player who added some excitement in the fourth quarter was junior Maycie Wolverton. The junior showed her aggressive style of play at she finished with four points including a “and one” as she drove for two and was fouled.
The ladies added 26 points in the second half. 15 of those points came from beyond the arc. Joining Whaley in the “three parade” was Robinson and Hannah Sheidler.
The Ladies return to home action Thursday night (weather permitting) against St. Ursula. If you haven’t been out to see these young ladies play the game they love, come out and support them as they begin to prepare for tournament action. The state tournament commences Saturday, February 19th at Genoa High School as the Giants play for a sectional title against Oregon Clay.
