FREMONT – Behind the second half efforts of guard Destiny Robinson, the Lady Giants improved to 7-1 and 3-1 in conference play with a 59-47 TRAC win over the Lady Trojans of Findlay Monday night at the Purple Pit.
It was Carma Johnson and Janiah Holmes who got the Ladies off to a good start in the first period of play. Johnson sank two three-pointers in the first quarter and Janiah Holmes had 10 first quarter points as Ross got off to a 16-8 lead.
In the second quarter the Giants were held to just eight points with a tough Findlay defense. Jasmin Heidelburg, Destiny Robinson, Johnson, and Holmes each scored two points apiece matching the eight-point scored by the Lady Trojans as the teams entered intermission with Ross holding on to 24-16 lead.
The Lady Giants came out in the second half ready to unleash their secret weapon. Robinson who was held to two first half points, put on a show as she scored nine third quarter points and 12 fourth quarter points. “I am blessed to have her (Robinson) on the team,” coach Juan Vela said. “Then you add the rest of our players, and they go well together. Destiny had two points in the first half, not once did she ever look frustrated. But in the third quarter when her teammates got in foul trouble, she was our offense and we spread the floor, set some screens, and let her do her thing. She scored because she wanted to win for the team.”
Findlay did explode for 23 fourth period points, but they could not keep up with the pace established by Robinson and Co. The junior point guard hit two three pointers, one two pointer and finished 13 of 14 from the foul line to lead Ross with 23 points.
Others scoring for the Giants included Holmes with 12, Johnson with 10, Lyndi Wolf, Heidelburg and Maylin DeWalt with four each and Abby Cahill with two. “We had a little bit of adversity with Carma and Janiah getting into foul trouble in the second half and then Maylin and Jasmin come in and even though they hadn’t had a lot of minutes in the last few games, they both came in and I thought Maylin did a really good job with on-ball defense. They both hit for some key points in the second half as well.”
The Giants welcome the Lima Sr. Lady Spartans to the Purple Pit Thursday night for another TRAC contest.
