FREMONT – The Lady Giants (8-1) (4-1) are rolling again as they handled the Lima Lady Spartans Thursday night at the “Purple Pit” 61-29.
Lima (1-4) in Three Rivers Athletic Conference play, couldn’t find the basket until with 1:21 remaining in the first quarter, after Ross scored 23 points, Lima earned their first basket. The quarter ended with the Lady Giants in total command 25-4. The first quarter was paced by Lyndi Wolf. The 6’2” sophomore connected nine points, including one three pointer.
During the second quarter there was equal scoring amongst the Purple and White charges. Carma Johnson scored seven points while Natalia Alejandro had five points. Wolf and Robinson four points apiece while Maylin DeWalt and Janiah Holmes had one bucket. The half time board read Little Giants 49, Lima Sr. 11.
The lopsided win gave coach Juan Vela a chance to play some of his younger players during the second half of play. Despite the big win he wasn’t overly thrilled that his younger players didn’t play particularly well during the third and fourth quarters.
“That was the first thing we talked about in the locker room after the game,” Vela began. “I said, we didn’t score a point in the fourth quarter and that is not good. I also told them that they need to execute and be aggressive. They are in there as varsity players, and we must be able to score point.”
The varsity pleased their coach with how they came out and attacked the basket and made plays. “Earlier this season we didn’t have energy coming out to start games,” Vela explained. “Are energy level has been very inconsistent. It doesn’t matter who we are playing, we must “bring it”. We must be ready, and I feel like our girls are doing that now. It doesn’t matter who is on the court. Everyone is “bringing it.”
Well in the coaches’ words. The Lady Giants certainly “Brought it” on this night.
The scoresheet showed DeWalt with seven points, Destiny Robinson with 15 to lead the Ladies, Alejandro finished with seven, Johnson added seven, Abby Cahill contributed with four, Holmes had eight and Wolf finished with 13.
The home stand continues as the Lady Giants will play host to a non-conference game against Napoleon Monday evening.
