SANDUSKY– Yes, the Lady Giants’ season came to an end against Olmstead Falls in the Division Regional Semi Final. But these Lady Giants did something that has been seen in a long time in Fremont. They brought their community together in an incredible display of support and pride.
It was a 25-20 lead at the half for Ross. The first half saw the play of the Lady Giants that we all know and love. Aggressive play, sharp passing, some hard-to-make shots. The fan base all watched as the BIG THREE played circles around their opponent. Senior Janiah Holmes finished her incredible career led the charge as she scored eight first half points. Destiny Robinson and Carma Johnson had seven points apiece. Throw in a three-point shot by Lyndi Wolf and the five-point lead belonged to Ross at the break.
Olmstead Falls heated up in the second half as they scored six three-point shots and made another six free throws as their energy helped them pull away from the Lady Giants. It was a 28-12 advantage for the opponent in the second half.
“They (Olmstead Falls) came out with energy in the second half,” coach Juan Vela said. “Their energy just kept on growing as the game went on and we just couldn’t match that energy. They started hitting some outside shots, they started rebounding and that was the difference of the game.”
Johnson ended the game leading Ross with 15 points. Robinson was held to just 11 points while Holmes finished with eight and Wolf with three.
Despite the tough loss, what an amazing season it was. 22 out of 26 games were victories during the season. A first trip ever to the regional level of the state tournament, and an undefeated record at the “new” Purple pit. All accomplishments that are ‘firsts’ in Lady Giant Basketball. Hats off to this incredible team and coaches that Fremont is certainly all proud of.
