FREMONT–The second annual Fremont Vantage Lady Giants Wrestling Tournament was held at Fremont Ross Saturday. The event began at 10am. 29 teams from around Northwest Ohio competed during the seven hours of spills, holds, reversals and pins.
The Little Giants brought home a second-place finish with 140 points while a strong Gibsonburg team won the event with 151 points.
“I’m happy with the progress we are seeing out of the girls,” coach Jen Long said. “It was good to have some of our ladies back in the line-up after battling injuries. We are a little dinged up, but our ladies are mentally strong and pushing through.”
In the 100 lbs. weight class, Malaya Hughes (24-8) finished third for Ross winning her final match over Avery Gaskalla (10-7) of Clyde.
Freshman Sophia Metcalf (12-5) took fourth in her first Vantage Tournament.
Mallory Zadel (20-9) of Avon Lake beat Metcalf for third with a fall at 3:27.
Moving on to the 115 lbs. class, sophomore Jaiden Long had one of the best finishes of the day for Ross. Her 2nd place came after being defeated in the final match by Morgan Leonhardt (21-1) of Gibsonburg with a fall at 2:36.
In the 125 lbs. class senior Samantha Alejo (14-5) also won the silver. She was defeated in the final match by McKenzie Montgomery (16-5) of Gibsonburg with a 15-10 decision.
Senior Ella Warner was a fourth-place finisher in the 140 lbs. class. Ella lost in the third-place match to Stella Strong (12-8) of Woodmore.
Senior Emma Guttierrez (13-3) was also a fourth-place finisher. She fell to Findlay’s Julia Bollenbacher (19-6) in a close 3-2 decision in the 145 lbs class.
Sophomore Kayonna Vann gathered in a second-place finish in the 190 lbs class. She dropped the championship match to 17-0 Savannah Isaac a senior from Toledo Whitmer.
