Little Giants storm into District

FREMONT – With The Lady Giants 30-point victory over St. Ursula, the Purple Storm proceeds to District play at Carey High School against Toledo Start.  Start advanced with a 65-57 win over the Sandusky Blue Streaks. Earlier in the season, despite Komara Sylvester’s 35-point effort, Ross won the contest between the two schools 68-56.

The Little Giant defense was never better than against St Ursula. The Arrows ended the night hitting just four of 26 2-point shots.  They finished four of six from three-point land with the help of Riley Reichert, who scored four times from beyond the arc.

Fremont Ross had a momentary scare when, with just 11 seconds off the clock, Destiny Robinson went down with a wrist injury.  During her absence it became the Carma Johnson show as the senior forward scored 11 of her teams 21 points in the quarter.

A huge sigh of relieve came over the Purple Pit when Robinson, The Lady Giants’ Leader, returned to the court. She dazzled as usual with six points before the end of the first quarter. That helped the Ladies to complete a 11-0 run over the last four mins of the quarter to take a 21-9 lead.

St. Ursula opened the second quarter with a three-pointer only to have it matched by Robinson who drained her own three-pointer. The Arrows were never closer than 10 points during the second stanza as Robinson and the ladies put on a basketball exhibition. By the time the second quarter was over, Ross had built an 18-point lead at 35-17.

The second half started with the game pretty much over.  The closest St. Ursula would come the rest of the way was 16 points when the score read 38-22.

With many of the junior varsity players seeing action the fourth quarter, Fremont drove to their fourth straight Sectional Championship.

Statistically for Fremont Ross, Destiny Robinson led the Ladies with 19 points and added 12 rebounds and three assists.  Fellow senior Carma Johnson finished with 16 points, with nine other Lady Giants hitting at least one basket during the game. Senior Natalia Alejandro, junior Maylin Dewalt, and freshman Rehnia Ruiz added three-point makes.

As a team the Lady Giants made 19 of 41 two-point shots and finished with five of 17 three-pointers. They shot 73.7% from the line with 14 makes in 19 attempts.

The Fremont Ross-Toledo Start battle will take place at Carey High School Thursday at 6pm.
