In their highly anticipated season opener, the Lady Giants came out strong but were ultimately unable to hold off the Northern Lakes League opponent Sylvania Northview, falling 37-49.
The Lady Giants took advantage of an uncharacteristically cold start by the Wildcats, building an early lead and showcasing disciplined play on both ends of the court. Northview, known for their sharpshooting, struggled to find their rhythm, allowing the Lady Giants to control the tempo and maintain a lead throughout the first half.
Heading into halftime, the Lady Giants held a solid advantage and looked poised to open their season with a statement win. Late into the third quarter, they extended their lead to seven points, thanks to sharp ball movement and clutch shooting from senior Lyndi Wolf, who connected on three three-pointers in the contest.
However, Northview found their offensive stride late in the third, erasing the deficit and taking a narrow lead into the final quarter. The Wildcats’ momentum continued into the fourth, as they capitalized on key turnovers and hit crucial shots down the stretch to seal the win.
Despite the loss, the Lady Giants showed promise. Wolf led all scorers with 11 points, demonstrating her ability to deliver in clutch moments. Sophomore Ava Jones added 8 points, and senior Jasmin Heidelberg contributed 7, highlighting a balanced offensive effort that will be pivotal as the season progresses.
The Lady Giants will look to regroup and build on their strong start when they take the court next week against Anthony Wayne.
