In a game that showcased both resilience and the importance of depth, the Fremont Ross Lady Giants secured a 36-26 victory over Southview on Friday night. Despite struggling to find their offensive rhythm and committing several uncharacteristic turnovers, the Lady Giants managed to hold on for the win.
The game started on a promising note for Fremont Ross, as they surged to a commanding 16-2 lead in the first quarter. However, the momentum quickly shifted in the second quarter when their offense stalled, managing only a single point. Southview capitalized on Fremont’s struggles but was unable to fully erase the deficit, leaving the Lady Giants with an 8-point lead heading into halftime.
The turning point came in the second half when Shayniah McDuffy came off the bench and delivered a much-needed spark. Her relentless defensive pressure disrupted Southview’s offense and created opportunities for easy transition points. McDuffy’s energy galvanized the team, allowing them to regain control of the game.
“Shayniah’s effort on both ends of the floor was the difference tonight,” said head coach Juan Vela. “She gave us exactly what we needed to pull away in a tough game.”
Lyndi Wolf also played a pivotal role, contributing 9 points to pace the Lady Giants. Her steady play helped the team maintain their composure during critical stretches of the game.
With the win, the Lady Giants improve to 4-5 on the season and remain unbeaten in conference play at 4-0. The victory positions them well in their quest to defend their Northern Lakes League title.
“We know there’s work to be done, but being undefeated in the league at this point puts us in a good place,” said coach Vela. “If we clean up some of our mistakes, we have the potential to be very dangerous down the stretch.”
Fremont Ross will look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their next matchup against Toledo Whitmer this Saturday.
